we were told by my grandfather that when he bought it in '71 that is was orginally a 6v and returned to dealer by another buyer in which they converted to 12v when he bougth it. It is a three cylinder perkins diesel with all delco electrical parts as far as we can tell. still run good but keeps blowing out the voltage regulator and only one side of light work on it. reason i want to rewire it

Massey Ferguson switched to 12V charging @ the change-over from the 35/50/65/ect to the 100 series. They ALL used GM/Delco Remy generators, then alternators (after 1968????) No 6V 100 series ever built..... .

The lights not working on ONE FENDER is a common malady assosciated with a bad ground. Check the point where the fender bolts to the axle housing for starters. Loosen the two 5/8" bolts that attach to the axle. SLide a small nail (i.e. a #4 finish nail) in between the fender bracket and the axle housing. Then tighten those 2 bolts TIGHT. The nail will "dig in" to both surfaces, getting a good ground contact. (Fast, easy shadetree mechanic trick!)

On the regs "blowing". Check ALL the wiring. You might find one or two switched or hooked up wrong. (I'm thinking of the "field" and "sense" wires to alternator) That may be causing over-charging. That'll fry a regulator in a heartbeat.

I've got a 1971 150 diesel. Owned it since new. I've got the wiring schematics you need. I just don't have any way to send them, OTHER than snailmail. My email is left open. Send me your mailing addy and I'll copy the diagram and send you a copy.

I beg to differ. Our 1960 MF 65 was 12 volt from day one!

You're absolutely right. Not sure where I got that at. I've got a MF 50 that's 12V original.

old age ;)

Also, on the lights, there is a series of "plug-in" connectors and wires that join behind and under the seat, just to the right hand side of the master control spring. That cluster of connectors can (and DOES) often cause troubles. Wiring splits to each fender at that point. One MAY be getting power and the other side NOT.

Just a guess, but is it the RIGHT fender not lighting? (Most common with ground issues)

The reason one side of the lights don't work is either bad ground or a loose wire. The wire's are easy to trace for the headlights and are a separate harness from the rest of the tractor.

As far as the regulator goes, I'd remove the generator (or alternator, whatever it has) and have it tested, along with the regulator.

I can't say where to get a harness for a Massey, but I've already made my own light harness for my Oliver 1600. Not too hard at all, just takes a little time and a bunch of different colored wires. Some other guy was looking for a harness for a 65 or something, look for that post a few pages down and the same place should be able to hook you up.

The tractor should have been 12v from the factory....

100 series were already 12 volt. By 1970 150"s were equipped with an alternator with EXTERNAL regulator. Is yours gas or diesel? (wiring is different)

Are you sure it was converted? I would have thought a 1970 would come as 12 volt. Dave
