Rebuilt my grandfather's F40 from the ground up. The motor is rebuilt, carb is rebuilt, and the electrical system has new plugs, cap, rotor, and condensor. When at idle it has an occasional miss, but off idle around 6 to 800 rpm it sputters and misses pretty steady with no load on it, up around 1200 it runs smooth. With a load on it, it runs smooth with all kinds of power. The load needle is 1-1/4 out, the idle needle is shut. If you turn it out to 1 turn it runs worse. Its a 683 schebler carb. that has been rebuilt with all new parts. Just looking for ideas on why it idles so rough.

On many carbs, the idle adjustment does not adjust idle fuel. It adjust idle air. If your carb is designed this way (and many of this era of tractor are) then you are idling full rich. That makes me suspect you have an air leak downstream of the carb metering system, i.e. at the throttle shaft, at the connect flange between the carb and the intake manifold, or at the intake manifold to cylinder head interface. This would lean out the mixture especially at idle and part throttle where the intake manifold vacuum is highest.

Using some starting fluid or spray carb cleaner, CAREFULLY (it's flamable) spray some around these positions with the engine running in the rpm whee it runs the rattiest. If you hear the rpm increase when you've sprayed some in a particular area, that's where the leak is at.

I would say it has to do with the main jet running the tractor at idle. Then not wanting to transition. Have you tried closing the main and idling the tractor on the idle jet, then opening the main only as far as needed? A second guess would be slop in the distributor shaft allowing spark scatter while not loaded. Both are guesses, but I would go for setting the idle needle of the carb first. I can run my generator (B&S 8 horse) on the main jet, but it surges badly when not at idle or full load... Setting the idle first fixed that. HTH

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron
