Bought a MF 165 Diesel with a Freeman loader, the aux. hydraulic pump was bad, loader was not working at all when I purchased it. Picked up a new Eaton pump to replace the broken Borg-Warner, the dump seems to work fine but when I attempt to lower the bucket it acts as if one side is hanging up, it doesn't come down even. I've read that you don't have to bleed these things so what's up? Also the fluid was down to where it didn't show on the dipstick, so I added until I had fluid above the magnetic portion of the stick which is maybe 3 inches up the stick from the bottom and I noticed the fluid looked "milky" suggesting water in the fluid. The loader also would drop a little on its own like it was seeking its own level, I saw no leaks anywhere. Any advise would be appreciated, thanks

The dipstick is a metal rod about 18" long with a 3" magnetic section on the bottom end, the dipstick is supposed to attach to a screw in breather looking cap to the reservoir. The only mark on it is about half way up is a score mark machined in to the rod, should I assume this is the full mark? I believe the water may have gotten in through this area, the breather thing is covered by an aluminum can, not exactly factory spec's here. I'll replace asap. As for the control block I assume you mean where the levers are located? Is this a simple rebuild? Thanks for the reply & Merry Christmas.

Hi, unfortunately not. If your block has sections bolted together with long studs then you may be able to replace the complete slice. If your block is made from one piece of metal with 2 or more spools in it then you will have to change the whole assembly.
Some blocks have replaceable spools (Sauer for example) so it would be worth checking first.

Does your dipstick not have indicators on it?(ie full/add/low?) If your fluid has water in it you need to drain and fill with new, replace filters and find out where the water is entering and repair...You may find with new fluid your loader will act/work normal,its worth trying,and you need to get the water out of there anyway! Hope this helps. Jim

If the tractor is new to you and the loader operation is erratic, you will need to check the following;
Make sure your filter is clean, make sure that there are no obstructions/blockages/kinks in the supply pipe to the pump and ensure that the supply pipe is of larger bore all through than the outlet pipe. Loss of loader position is likely to be your spool (control)block passing oil internally.
