165 charging problem

Our 165 has an intermittent charging problem, sometimes it'll charge, sometimes it won't, ussually won't. Lately it's been getting worse too. about 1 year ago in the middle of the winter we replaced the generator (with a rebuilt one) because it wasn't charging at all. It charged great for about the 1st month, barely had to rev the engine, maybe 12-1500 rpm's, to keep the battery charging with all the lights on.

Somewhere between 2-3 years ago we replaced the regulator too, so both of those components are relatively new.....

Anybody else have these same symptoms? Time is short but I have a little more over christmas break. Electrical systems are also my weak point.

Hi,

I am not an expert, but I refeet the regulator system for charging the battery of my MF165 with my good friend (he is an expert with electricity). What can I suggest you is to verify all connections from the generator to the regulator box, because I noticed that the connection's wires getting loose with the vibrations and the variability of the temperatures (wintertime and summertime). I observed it recently and on particular yesterday morning when I started my MF 165 : I needed to shake a little bite the gerb of wires going to the regulator (ground made something) to start the engine! So it is the first thing to verifie, I think !

Have a good day and see you soon ! Jicarre

Hey,
Jicarre is right, all connections must be sure on the charge circuit. If needed, they have to be gently pressed to be sure that male connections are well held inside female connections. Corrosion has to be removed too on connections. If not, they may make a resistance which can change the voltage of charge. I explain : the circuit voltage V (theoricaly 12 V) is always checked by the regulator. If V is more than around 14V, excitation of generator(the smallest wire on generator)is switched off by the relay included into regulator. If V is less, then excitation is sent from regulator to generator. Charge starts.
In your case, regulator is nearly new so switching voltage should be well adjusted. A good way to understand is to use a voltmeter (even a cheap small one) and connect it on the battery to measure its voltage. When start engine, V should drop aroud 9 or 10 V when using starter. Then V should rise slowly to around 14V (it may need several minutes, it depend of speed of engine). It should start stabilizing around 13.5 V. If it starts to stabilize lower, the problem is confirmed. As battery is not loaded to its highest voltage, it gets empty quicker.
Good luck, let me know about it, I'll try to help you.
