I am looking at a Massey Ferguson 175 diesel that has been setting in the weeds and bushes for about 15 years. The tractor is all there and the tin is in good shape for a tractor that has set out this long. I do know the tractor was running when parked but burning alot of oil. It has a standard trans and power steering. I would like to restore this tractor but will i have more in it than it is worth.

My father in law had a 175 years back and he got rid of it when he kinda got out of farming. He held onto his JD720. In my opinion the Massey was the better of the two tractors. It was nicer to plow with and the three point hitch realy came in handy. I wish I had that tractor today. If you can get it for a good price you'll be happy you got it. It was realy a nice tractor for running the brush hog.

I cannot; using my greatest imagination, understand why anyone would choose a John Deere 720 over a Massey 175.

If the tractor tinwork is in good condition then that has to be a good reason to look very closely at the rest of it as far as a restoration is concerned. Any decent 175 has to be worth restoring. Check the fenders for rust. UK ones rust the tool boxes out. Check the steering and anything that might be seized or perished, linkage tyres etc. As far as the engine goes look on the black side for a full overhaul and work that into what you are prepared to pay for it. Look at it as an investment not just an expense to get the tractor going. If you plan to do a proper restoration then go for it.
Any chance of a photo?
