Got my 35 project tractor home, not sure what the engine needs, previous owner started an engine job, so tractor came in several piles. That was 4 years ago. Filled sump with oil , gave it a wee tug, engine turns freely. Fuel system is disconnected. What would you suggest, put it all back together and see how badly or if it runs? Or any suggestions as to how to determine what it needs in way of overhaul? I"ve got an original shop manual, room in the barn between the other two pets.

Make:

The previous owner probably did not take the engine apart unless he believed it needed major work. Have you any indication of the owner's mechanical knowledge?

That said, as the engine is already apart, it makes sense to give it a good inspection so that you can replace anything indicated before reassembly.

The good news is overhaul kits for these engines are modestly priced.

Previous owner was a heavy equipment mechanic, pretty good with a wrench. I'll pick up where he left off.
