My MF135 (3 cyl Perkins gas engine) is stuck in reverse and I can't get it out. I can shift from hi to lo range but can't budge the gear shift. It has been working fine, except for an occasional sticking in various gears once in a while, but always came free in a few seconds. I tried everything I can think of to rock it free but no luck. Can anyone out there help me ?

I was at a consignment auction last year when
the auctioneer came upon a nice 135 that was
stuck in gear.I saw the owner drive it off the
truck in the morning.I was high bidder at $3500
when the owner stopped the sale and said the
transmission was locked up.He started over,I
bought it for $1700.,hauled it home, popped it
out of gear and it still runs great.

You know, I've seen this problem happen time and again and the fix is always the same. Remove the oil filler cap and slide the offender back to the neutral position and wait till it happens again. The shifting rails are always dry when you look in there at them and that makes them easy to slide past where they were meant to stop and there you are stuck in two gears again. Why not try to fix it better. Know how tacky motorcycle chain lube is? It has to stay on a chain whirling at speed without coming off, why wouldn't it stay on the shifter rails and keep the forks from sliding too far? Maybe even regular gear grease would work. Better check it out and let us know, we need a more permanent fix for this problem. L8R----Fred

See my post in this thread. It shows a pic of the shift rails, Detents in them, and the pin and holder that locks one rail in neutral while the other is in gear. I haven't had this problem ( mine is apart for hydraulic trouble) But I think if that pin is worn or the detents worn, it would be possible for both rails to become engaged at the same time. You are right about the dryness, think I'll try some type of grease when I reassemble the tractor. JIM

Thanks for all the advice guys. It turned out to be very easy to fix. Big Dean suggested that I take off the transmission cap next to the stick, and with a very clean pry bar carefully slide the big gear forward. It took all of about 1 minute to do, most of that taking the cap off and putting it back on. In the future I'll slow down and shift slowly and save my self the panic attack.

I am inclosing a pic of the transmission detent pin. Maybe the cause of your problem. You have to split the tractor behind the transmission to get to it. Questions? Let me know- JIM Couldn't get the pic to post, so I'll try a link to it!

Keith, I have a MF 65 and 180 that occasionally gets stuck in reverse, usually when I have got in a hurry to change gears, I remove the pipe plug from the top of the transmission, It's about a 2" plug and take a tire tool or crow bar and move the shifter fork back to a neutral position, also check your trans fluid at this time, it seems that if it gets low and your trans gets a little hot the problem is more apt to happen.
