iN THE DARK I STUPIDLY CROSSED THE CABLES COMING FROM THE STARTING VEHICLE TO MY 1983 MASSEY MODEL 1030 DIESEL. THE BATTERY WAS SEVEN YEARS OLD AND WHEN I PUT THE NEW ONE IN THERE WAS STILL NO SIGN OF LIFE--NO LIGHTS, HORN, DASH, NOTHING. I'M HOPING THERE IS A FUSE THAT WAS SHORTED OUT (?) IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CAN GIVE ME SOME GUIDANCE? ALL THE FUSES IN THE BOX TO THE LEFT OF THE STEERING WHEEL ARE INTACT.

THANKS.

There is a good chance you shorted all the diodes in the alternator and they are drawing all the current from the new battery. And there might be a fuse wire from the battery to the ammeter that is burned open by those shorted diodes in the alternator.
