I was bush hogging over the holiday and I ran into this problem. My PTO lever would disengage and pop back into neutral. I think it happened when the mower would raise because of ground unevenness. I went along holding the PTO lever in place and could feel every so often something pushing the lever/inner gear forward.

Any ideas?

This is on a 1958 MF-65

Jeff.

If its like the 100 series, could it be that the roll pin where the lever turns has worn enough where the lever is not quite fully in postion.

Hi Jeff,
A difficult one, couple of possibilites:
Possible broken dowels that retain the pump in place allowing the pump shaft to move around and effectively throw off the PTO gear. Normally you hear knocking coming from inside.
The side cover that the lever is mounted in has a ball bearing and spring to hold in neutral or engagement. Does this feel positive in each position?

The lever has positive position. The force I was feeling through the lever was not insubstancal. It was fairly strong (5 to 10 lbs or so) but it was not constant only now and then. i.e. I could mow 10 min and nothing. I did pull the PTO and change the seals a year or so ago. I do not think it is the pump. I will check to see if I have excessive shaft play tonight.

Jeff
