Massey-Harris 444 Steering Play

I just bought my first tractor: a 1956 Massey-Harris 444. It seems to be in above average condition, except the steering has a huge amount of play in it. It came from the factory without power steering, but an after-market power steering that works on the steering shaft was added.

I removed the grill to take a look at the steering gear area. The worm gear has an adjusting screw, which is locked in place with a locknut. I discovered that I can turn the locknut with my fingers. I wanted to tighten the adjusting screw, but there is not enough room for a screwdriver: only about 7/8" between the screw and the frame casting in front of it.

I see that Harbor Freight Tools sells a right angle screwdriver that requires only 1" of clearance. But I think 1" is too wide. What should I do? Did they really make these tractors that difficult to service?

if the lock nut is loose then the iner screw might be loose as well i use just a flat peace of metal and one bent in a L shape and come in from the side . P.S. make sure it;s full of oil

Thanks Marlowe for your reply. This problem may be a lot worse than I thought. I checked the steering gear oil and found none. I used a wire and when I pulled it out, there was only a little bit of dried oil on the wire. When I wiped the wire on a rag, I saw shiny pieces of metal filings.

The steering shaft is loose down near where it enters the steering gear box, so I'm thinking that the roller bearing at the end of the shaft is being ground up. Should I remove those 4 bolts that cover the end of the shaft? It looks like it would be very difficult to reach the lower 2 with a wrench. Would it be easier to remove the whole steering gear box? Would I have to raise the front end of the tractor off the ground?

In your recommendation to make your own screwdriver out of metal, did you mean to use 1 piece of metal or 2 pieces? Thanks again, Marlowe.
