This summer I changed the oil in the transmission on a MF 35 that I purchased from an estate. I put 90WT GL1 mineral oil in the gear case. The last time I used the tractor was to run a 5ft bush hog in August. I used it this week to unload a welding table (about 600 pounds) from my truck with a lift pole. The tractor did not seem to have a problem lifting the table (the front end of the tractor did not lift off the ground).

I used the lift this week and noticed a jerk or shudder in the lift with only the lift pole attached that I had not noticed previously. I am not sure if this was related to lifting the table or if it is weather related because the temperature here is now in the 30"s and 40"s. Is the shudder normal with 90WT in low temperature use or do I have other issues to check out?

Thanks for the comments. I do not believe that the hydraulics have every been worked on and I do not have enough experience with this tractor to know whether this change of characteristic was a normal trait or whether it indicated the need for repairs.

Hi,
You will probably find that '90' oil is going to be too heavy as the temperatures fall. In addition if you allow for a possible partial blockage of the filter, the system will probably struggle to draw enough oil.

I beleive the specs call for GL-1 80W for temps below 50F. My TO-30 when started in cold weather has a jerky 3 pt when I first start up. After the oil warms, it's smooth. My oil is clear with no signs of water and I think it's probably 90W. I've never replaced it brecause it's still an amber color with no signs of water.
