I keep reading the Tafe tractor is a generic Massey Ferguson. What model Massey Ferguson would the Tafe 35 DI and the Tafe 45 DI be compared to?

The Tafe 35DI engine is a Simpson copy of the Perkins 144, used in early TO/MF35's with a rear end more like a 135.

The 45DI has the 152 cu Simpson, making the 45 more of a 135.

Thanks for the information Paul. I purchased the Tafe 45 with 4WD after my wife told me not to bring one home that didn't have 4WD. It's a work horse. Very pleased. The only negative I've found is the PTO is hard to shift. Any tips you or anyone would have on the PTO would be greatly appreciated.

Wanted to know how do you like the 4x4 Tafe. Is it holding up really good? Also is it easy to turn when your pulling a load? Is the lift when using it for box blading very good? I know the massey is but I have wondered about the Tafe. I am looking to purchase one possibly soon, What kind of prices are out there on the 4x4 45 model?

A comment and a suggestion -

The comment: Some new tractors will be very difficult to shift with tranny and PTO and other tolerances a little tight when new.

The Suggestion: Make sure to idle the tractor engine first, then press the clutch pedal completely to the floor, then wait ~3 seconds for the shafts to stop spinning, then engage the lever. This will eliminate grinding. If there is no grinding, just balky shifting, you may try reclutching or easing out on the clutch until the system wears a little. If the PTO grinds at a high pitch, the PTO stage clutch may not be disengaging completely, and may need adjustment or further attention.

Good luck and congratulations on your purchase.

Thanks for the information Paul. No grinding noise, just balky to shift. I will try idling the engine, I have tried all the others things you list.

DJ...
What did you pay for the unit? Did the seller claim you were getting "dealer price"? Is he in MA? Just curious...

I was quoted $11,695... dealer price(?), but I also was quoted $12,300 for a Massey MF231S (the real thing), and $14,700 for the MF271 brand new!

For the difference of a couple hundred or thousand , it didn't make any sense to buy generic for me.

Good luck with your new unit DJ.

Current prices for the TAFE 35DI, 45DI and 45DI 4WD are 11k, 13k and 16k respectively. The new MF 231s can be had in the 12.7 to 13.5k range here in southern Indiana. Since you would have to go to the MF 243 4WD to get a MF 4WD, I would think the TAFE would be very price competitive (~2k cheaper). On the other hand, a straight 45 DI would seem to be no bargain against a MF 231s.

Thanks for the information Paul. The prices I was quoted for the Tafe 35DI, Tafe 45DI and the Tafe 45DI4WD was 10.5K, 12.3K and 13.9K. A used MF 231 with 1.2K hrs. went for 11.5K at an auction in June. It's a sellers market here in Tennessee. If I could have found a MF at the price you and John were quoted I would have purchased a MF. You just don't find them at that price in Tennessee. Do you have any idea what I could get a new or used haybine and round baler for in southern Indiana?

I priced the smallest CaseIH/Hesston round baler last summer at $8500. A new Idea 9 ft. sickle bar type mower conditioner ther previous summer at $9500. I imagine both of those numbers are ~10% higher by now.

As far as used, haybines (by that I mean sickle bar, not disc cutter) can be had from $1000 for a real fixer upper to $5000 for like new deere that you've paid too much for. Round bailers that will work well behind your tractor should be of 'open-throat' design or you will have a difficult time starting bales with your tractor, these are going to cost ~3k and up. If you have a bigger tractor to bale with, then other types of bales will be available, some cheaper dur to age.

Thanks for the information John. Your very close on the Tafe price. The prices on the Massey Ferguson is $8,000US to $12,000US less than I could find one. Let me know the Massey Ferguson dealer and address that quoted you those prices. I new there was a dealer with better prices than I was being quoted in Tennessee.

Hi DJ,

The full list price on the MF231S is $14K, and the MF271 is $17.5K. I understand the last few years more tractors are being sold to "weekender farmers" and dealers can quote thousands higher than actual list for a bargaining position (make you feel good price?). Unlike automobiles with list prices the average consumer can see everywhere...

Also the price quoted depends on the market climate... right now is kind of messed up (good for the consumer!)

I really do wish you the best with your new tractor, I don't want you to take me wrong. I'm just looking down the road, if TAFE becomes an orphan tractor and you need parts and service, you may have to go to the bank and fill out loan papers... what you "saved" today may cost you dearly tomorrow.

In response to "If TAFE becomes an orphan Tractor" Supposedly the parts are interchangeable with a Massey Ferguson as per TAFE dealers that I have talked with. Even the new 5000 model has a perkins diesel engine in it. Also Tafe was at one time a liscensed manufacturer for MF. This is some of the things the dealers are quoting. If this is incorrect please advise. Dont want to purchase if this is incorrect.
