Check the engine timming. If it is off, it will run hot and you will loose power.

mine did the same thing one year ago when i bought it. the more i ran it the sicker i got. rebuilt the carb (soak well in carb cleaner) the man i bought it from had also turned the mixture screw way in to get rid of the puff of black smoke (this is normal) when the throttle is pulled back rappidly. i use mine about 8 hour a week in the summer, boy does it really drink the gas like everyone sayes, about 1.25 gal per hour mowing with 72 inch mower, my snapper used a lot more gas. the only problem i have with it is the power steering (it has none). good luck.

Those old Fords (9N) were designed to plow an acre an hour on a gallon of gas. With almost double the horsepower as a Ford, I don't think that 1 1/4 gallons an hour is excessive. Also, on the heat thing, a rich fueled engine will run cooler than a lean fueled engine if everything else is up to snuff. L8R----Fred

FRED: i was joking to bad they took out the rolly eyes feature. the diesel owners arround here like to talk about how bad the gas tractoers burn fuel. i really don't think they have ever owned a gas one, or they would see that any old massey with live pto is a dream to own and easy on the fuel.
