Starting Diesel ?

First, I'll tell you I know nothing about diesels.
I picked up a basket case MF135 and am trying to start it....Perkins ad3-152 engine.
I changed fuel filters, put in new fuel and bled the air out through the filters and down to the fitting on the injector pump.
When I crank it, I get what appears to be very light grey or white smoke from the stack, and occasionally it seems to be a darker grey, but it still doesn't start.
I'm using jumper cables from my pickup to the tractor battery to help spin it faster.
One question I have is about the throttle.
Should I set the throttle to low idle, mid way or wide open, or does it matter?
By the way, the outside temp is in the 60's which I think should be warm enough to help.

Thanks for any advice !

Did you take out the 2 blleder screws on the injector pump and spin it over to see if you are getting a good stream of fuel. Then if that is good maybe using a shot of starting fluid. Was the tractor running before you started replacing the filters?

I agree with BigMarv. Make sure you have lots of fuel at the bleed holes with no air bubbles. After you put the bleeders back in, pump the primer about 10 times. Then if it won't go, give it a very tiny shot of ether in the air cleaner. That's how I do mine because I have a loader and it's hard to get at the injectors. Open the throttle up and once it starts slow it down right away and it will be good. Dave

Forgot to mention, DON'T USE THE THERMO-STRART WITH ETHER! It can be used after you get it running. Dave
