I'm looking at a MF 165, can someone explain what the multipower transmission is and will I be able to run a rototiller off of it. From what I've read on this site it sounds like the tranny is some what like an automatic and that the low range has no engine braking capability. I'll be tilling in "muck" which is a fertile black soil not hard packed. I'm concerned about being pushed by the tiller, I want to be able to till because the "muck" is low land and may be wet so I want to put as little power to the wheels as possible to avoid getting stuck. Thanks

Multipower is what IH called Torque Amplifier.

Basically its an auxiliary planetary transmission with a small ratio that can be shifted on the go. It acts to split the gears of the main transmissions (typically and high low and a 3 or four speed transmission). It has an overriding clutch much like a Sturmey Archer bicycle transmission. Its locked out by a hydraulic clutch.

Its handy for getting a bit more power when encountering damp soil while plowing.

Its also handy for starting out in the top tranmission gear with Multipower in low gear then shifting up for road cruising.

You're right about Multi-Power in low range and tillers. Low will free-wheel. A rotary tiller will push any tractor. You need L/1st with multipower in high. You've got enough tractor there to overcome need for L/L/1st.

Is 1.5 mph slow enough for the tiller? Some want slower and that's the speed my MF-135 does in its lowest gear with multipower.

All muti-power does is reduce you ground speed in low range. High range has engine braking and low range doesn't. A 165 is big enough the rototiller shouldn't push it. If it does then put the multi-power in high. A rototiller would work excellent on a 165 with multi-power. Make sure you get a heavy duty tiller to handle the power you have. A light one can break the gears in the gear box. Hope this helps. Dave

The tiller will actually help to push the tractor through soft ground without pushing the tractor to fast. You need to run the tiller at 540 rpm's though. Dave
