MH 30 won't turn over

First time I have seen this one. The tractor has been sitting for a bit (two months?) but regularly used. When I hit the starter the engine turns over real slow, and the battery connections are real hot. I removed the started and tested it...seems to have lots of power. I removed the spark plugs and turned it over and it seemed OK as well.

Anyone seen this behaviour before? I've had the tractor for ~5 years; its never done this before.

Thanks in advance, Steve.

OK we can close this thread now. Turns out the starter will not turn over with a load. Worked fine out of the tractor (which threw me off, should have known better), but on the tractor it didn't have the power to turn the crank.

Unrelated issue...I can turn the engine by hand, quite easily. Lack of compression, wonder how long the engine will last...

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the replies.

I mentioned the hot cables because it is an indication of high amperage draw. I attached the booster cables from my running truck to do the test, and I *think* the connections were good. I"ll test that theory though.

Had the starter off and bench-tested it, seemed ok. The splines are squeaky clean and the gear which connects the starter to the engine looks good too...its very clean in there.

I"ll try the things you guys suggest, appreciate the help.

Hot cables mean bad conections some place or the starter is dragging. Also could be that the engine has rusted up a little and that would keep it from turning over as it should. Either way it wouldn't hurt to put a little tranny fluid in each cylinder to be sure its not from dry/rusty cylinder walls

MMB is right. Also, the first thing I check in your situation is the ground cable connection to the tractor. It is the culprit a large percentage of the time. To do a quick test, take some jumper cables and hook one to the ground on the batter and the other end of that same cable to a very good ground like a bolt on the bell housing (not the dash). Of course you can do the same test for the starter cable, essentially bypassing or supplementing the current cables.

Sounds like bad connections and maybe too thin battery cables. Take out the starter and polish off the steel where it contacts the clutch housing. Do the same on the clutch housing. Make sure you have #1 sized battery cables, even #0 (heavier) with good terminal ends. Make sure your battery terminals are clean and free of corrosion. Did you try a different battery?
