HOW HIGH SHOULD I WIND UP MY MF 275 4CYL PREKINS DEISEL BEFORE CUTTING WITH THE BRUSH HOG? MY TACH WORKS, BUT IS NOT MARKED VERY WELL. ALSO, WHY DO THEY CALL IT A 540 PTO, WHEN I'M SURE IT'S GOTTA BE REVVED UP MORE THAN THAT? JUST WHAT DOES THE 540 MEAN? THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP ON ALL MY QUESTIONS.

Typing niiall capital letters is like shouting, and is considered to be rude.

I have a 255-I think my 540 line is right about 2000 RPMs-will look next time I go to the shed.

2000 is probably for belt speed not PTO speed. Dave

Weird. I just looked and I have 2 lines-both with little arrows pointing to a PTO shaft picture in the middle of the tach. One line is at 1720 and the other is at 2000.

I bet your are right-1720 is the 540. If that is true then 2000 would put it at about 630. Is that the low and high end and 540 is in the middle or something?

I would say 1750, thats what my 135,175,180,And 1085 require forr 540 rpm.

I've seen it as low as 1680 rpm's. Anything around 1700 or 1750 wouldn't make much difference in the pto speed. Dave

There is no high and low end. Some implements can be run faster or use power under load and then the the tractor has to be revved up to keep the proper 540 pto speed. When you put a belt pulley adaptor on the pto shaft 2000 engine rpm gives the proper pulley rpm for the belt. I have a UK tractor with a tractormeter that says pto speed and belt speed. I looked in the manual and found the belt speed is approx. 3100 ft per minute at 2000 rpm. Hope this answers your question. Dave

540 is the standard PTO rpm for smaller tractors. Bigger tractors have 1000 rpm PTO's and some tractors have both. They have different splined shafts. The gear box on your mower speeds up the rpm to the proper speed for your mower. I'm guessing you need to have the tractor at around 1700 rpm for a 540 pto rpm. That's what it is on smaller MF's. About 3/4 throttle. There might be a line on your tach to line up the needle of the tach. Engage the pto at idle and then speed up engine. Hope this answers your questions. Dave
