I just aquired a Massey Harris 50. I do not know much about these because it is only my 2nd tractor. Had 9N before. The MH was to good a deal to pass up. Good sheet metal, no rust,no dents, good running & clean tractor with a 6' kingcutter finish mower for $1000. I am curious as to what Hp this tractor has. I was told 33hp at pto. Also, the clutch seems to be out of adjustment. It will shift gears fine, but you have to depress halfway for that & then depress more to engage PTO. However, the PTO will not engage by doing this. Have to have tractor engine shut off to engage/disengage PTO. Other than that it operates great. Does this sound serious or is it just a matter of adjustment?? I was told that the 9N was just as strong as the MH, but so far I have to disagree.

RE: Massey-Harris 50 HP question from Frank G.
The M-H 50 equipped with a Continental gasoline engine was tested at Nebraska University in 1956 in Test #595. Maximum Belt HP (Test C) was recorded at 31.36 HP. PTO tests were not conducted by Nebraska at this time. Those started in 1959. PTO HP will be somewhat less than belt HP figures. By comparison, the Ford-Ferguson System 9N delivered 23.07 MBHP at Nebraska in 1940, test #339. Your impressions were correct. Joe Evans

I had the same problem a year ago on our MH 50. Sounds like you need to replace the clutch. What a difference it will make! You got a good deal on that tractor and the cost of replacing the clutch is not that bad. A local dealer did it for under $1000.00 I plow alot of snow for three homes, grade a 1/4 mile driveway with a 100 foot change in elevation, plow and disc a very large garden, mow 15-20 acres, and cut and haul several cords of wood with this thing and am very happy with it. It has been on my wife's family farm since new and I don't think the family would ever part with it.
