Can anyone advise - I have recently bought a 1967 6 speed diesel 135 and have changed all the fluids prior to putting to use. After some moderate rotavating I am dismayed to hear a grinding noise (or violent rattling) from the rear of the tractor (around diff housing) when moving in third gear. Other gears do not make the noise and in 3rd the noise is evident in hi and lo. I put universal tractor oil (15w/30) in the hydraulics, to the marker. I also noted some magnetic steel filings on the drainer magnets when emptying the oil previously. Any coments gratefully received.

Hi Stu67, Cross your fingers and hope maybe you were in Constant pumping when you heard the rattling noise. That could be the cause. Pressure relief valve relieving the pressure. Then get the proper hydraulic oil in. Ray-s

Thanks to you both for the responses and I have indeed today sourced and substituted proper oil. Alas, it seems that the noise is still there and apparently coming from the diff or gear box, most noticeable in 3rd and could be described as a most disagreable clanking (though somewhat lessened when the diff-lock pedal is depressed [as am I at this instant]).

I've never seen a 15-40 designation on universal tractor fluid. I use MF perma-tran III for best operation. As for the tranny noise unfortunatly it sounds like a bearing/bushing or gear for third gear has been damaged. Is the clutch operating properly? Check with Big Dean. He would know more. Always lift the rotavator out of the ground before you shut it off. Have heard of broken pto shafts. Big Dean is the expert for your problem. Dave
