I am looking at buy a 135 gas 4 cyl. What are the major problems with these tractors. What should I look for, other than normal wear and tear stuff. Did the all have tachs and differntal locks? I am a Ford guy and know very little about Massey"s. As always any help is appreciated.

The MF-135 Deluxe has tachometer and Z-145 engine. The standard has no tachometer, probably a pan seat, and a Z-134 engine.

Differential lock was an option on all, I believe.

In the 19 years I've had mine, I've had to work on the rocker arm assembly where the cork rotted out and the lack of oil caused the shaft to twist and cut off the oil. Its had the seals on the concentric transmission input replaced but still leaks transmission oil into the bell housing but that may be the multipower hydraulic control valve that is in there too.

The multipower is reputed to be breakable, but so far I've not broken mine, not even when pulling 2 x16 plow at 4 or 5 mph shifting at full throttle when damp soil loaded it down.

Otherwise it wears like anything else. Water pump, front axle bushings, seals, battery, power steering. Well sometime the piston rod for the power steering cylinder broke and cocked the piston in the cylinder. The local MF shop wanted $500 for the assembly, a good machine shop rebuilt it for $125 and made a piston rod that won't break. While I had it apart, I put new bushings in the steering gear that I had to make since the original maker doesn't anymore. Mine has been run with an overly big MF-236 loader and that broke the front axle once.

Mine won't carry a JD RG-4 row crop cultivator for more than a couple hours at a time (but it had cateegory 2 pins anyway) or a 15' JD 400 rotary hoe, but that also had category 2 pins that I had to replace.

I'm using mine for more crop production than ever because its economical on fuel.

They sold hundreds of thousands of them. Some had power steering problems but that was usually with loaders attached. Also the front axle bushings and pin can wear but is easy to fix and put a bushing on each side. I think differential lock might have been standard on UK models. If it has multi-power, I've never had a problem. They put new seals in it when it was apart for a new clutch. The continental engines have been around for a long time and are a good engine. I have Perkins diesel which is outstanding. They also came with a 3 cylinder Perkins gas that is a good engine. They are normally pretty bulletproof. Check on Big Deans site. He lists some things to look for when buying used MF's. If you get a good one, you'll become a fan as well. Dave
