1945 Massey Harris Starter Problem

Hi,

I have a 1945 Massey Harris 101 JR. I have just begun the restoration process, and I do know that it ran up to the time it was parked about 7 years ago.

The problem I have is that it will not turn over using the starter. I see that it has a 12 volt car alternator on it so I am assuming that it has been converted over to 12v. (although the starter is the original 6v autolite starter.)

I can turn the engine over by hand, and I have taken the starter out and hooked the battery up to it, and it spins up freely. But when I put the starter back in and hook the battery up direct to the starter it just clicks, It's like it does not have enough power to turn over the engine. I am using a 12v battery that I just took out of my truck so I know it is good.

Does this mean that my Starter needs rebuilding?

Thanks for any advice

Jason

You may not have a good ground on the starter.

It may mean you may have to remove the ring gear and quarter it.A 4 cylinder engine always comes to rest in one of two places.A 6 cylinder engine ---one of three places. When the teeth on the ring gear get worn, it can cause the starter drive gear to lock up.Try turning the crankshaft a little bit before engaging the starter. If it cranks then you will know for sure.
It could also mean the starter windings are shot from someone using a 12 volt battery on it too long or the starter bushings are gone from the heavier 12 volt usage.Starter bushings were never designed for use of more than a few seconds without getting too hot and wearing out permaturely.(prematurely ---1945? lol.bob)

I have turned the engine over a bit at a time by hand, and still no luck.

I now have the starter off, and have taken it apart. The brushes seem ok, and bushing at the end with the brushes is also good. There is some play in the bushing at the end with the gear. although not enough to let the armature rub against the housing.

Everything else visible looks good.

anything else to look for while I have it apart.
