I"m changing the head gasket on a 354 Perkins. Should I use any sealer or not? Thanks.

I totally disagree with barnrat with using no sealer. I have both a 1130 and 1135 and have had to replace the head gaskets on both. Tried using no sealer the first time on my 1135 and used the tractor only 10 hrs and the head gasket blew. Tore tractor down and used copper coat spray a gasket sealer on it and have never had a problem in 10 years until just this year....finished drilling this spring and now its blowing water out of the radiator overflow!!! I recommend you take the head to a machine shop and have it magnaflexed to check for cracks and have the head checked for flatness, it might be warped?? I will never put a head gasket on dry again!!! Good luck

Head and block should be clean and dry. Absolutly NO sealer. I've done allot of these and I've had the best luck torquing the head bolts in increments. Bring all the bolts to 40ft-lbs then 70 and finally 85ft-lbs. Make sure you tighten the bolts in proper sequence. I mark the top of the bolt after I torqued it with a grease pencil to keep track of what bolts I've done, then wipe off and start over.

Follow Barnrats advice. Retorque after the engine has been run up to working temp and allowed to cool, then again at around 50 hours. So long as the head and block top are flat and the liner hieghts are correct you dont need sealer.
