Hi,

I am new to Massey Ferguson tractors and would appreciate your help.

I just picked up a MF 65. The only major problem I have found is the PTO will not work and the PTO lever will not move. It's frozen.

I'm waiting for the manuals I ordered to arrive but would like to work on it now. Where would a good starting point for this problem be.

Thanks

Jim

Hi Jim The first thing is drain the oil then remove the access plate with the PTO shift lever in it you can then check the sliding coupler on the bottom shaft that slides back and forth to engage the PTO. If you do not see what is causing your problem email me and I will try to help you figure it out.

Hi Big Dean,

I thank I found the problem. I followed your directions but could not see anything or get the lever to move. So seeing how I had already gone that far I removed the top cover and the drive shaft to the differential. The gear that the lever goes to still would not move forward or backwards. Because the tractor has set for so long and the fluid was milky I thought it might be rusted. So I tapped the gear lightly with a plastic mallet. Bingo, the gear moved and started working right. But it was not rust causing the problem. The problem lies with the rear PTO shaft bearing. I decided to pull the PTO shaft and check the bearings. Well the back bearing is missing half the balls. I guess with that many balls missing from the bearing the PTO shaft was slightly out of alignment and not letting the gear slide properly. Monday I"ll be going to my local dealer and order a new bearing. I have not checked the front bearing yet I need to get a brighter light. Thank You for your help.

Regards

Jim
