MF 165 Hydraulic PTO won't turn off

I have a 1968 MF 165 with the hydraulic PTO. The other day, when I started the tractor, the hydraulic PTO was turning although the lever was in the off position. When I shut the tractor off the previous day, the lever was in the off position and the PTO shaft was not turning.
The tractor was hooked up to a PTO driven manure spreader and had spread a load of manure and stopped when I returned the lever to the off position.

I have cycled the lever to the on and then off position several times but the shaft keeps turning when the lever is returned to the off position.

Any ideas what caused this and is the repair difficult? My mechanical skills are poor to average.

Hello,
Normally the cause of the IPTO not stopping is a worn brake pad or insufficient pressure applied to the pad. When you move from 'on' to 'off', oil is transferred from the plates to the brake cylinder. As the pad wears the brake effect becomes innefective. You may also have considerable wear in the outside of the drum where the pad makes contact.
In the 'off' position the turning force is usually 'drag' in the clutch plates. To test this, start the engine and make sure that the PTO is 'off'. With a fence post or similar, place the post against the side of the PTO shaft and against the hitch where you can apply some pressure against the PTO shaft. The shaft should slow and stop and may or may not start again when released.
If this happens, it looks like the pad. If you remove the LH side cover after draining the oil, you will see the IPTO drum and brake pad which is similar in size to a large thumb. It is held in place by a bolt (5/8 unf) if I remember, and engaged in the piston of the brake cylinder.
Removal and refittment is a very awkward job but it can be done. Check the amount of wear on the IPTO drum. If this is major you will have to remove the hydraulic cover. In addition to this the tractor will have to be split between the gearbox and rear centre housing in order to remove the IPTO unit and whatever pump/s are fitted. If the valve body of the IPTO unit has wear at the sealing rings this has the potential to be a very expensive job in addition to labour costs. Special tools are required in addition to a safe means of splitting the tractor.
Please let me know how you get on with the PTO test first.
Regards
DavidP
