Hello MF folks! I usually hang around the Ford boards but I'm trying to help a friend find a good loader tractor. I've run across a MF 50 with a loader. My questions:
1. I think this is a 1956. Serial number is CHM513110. Can you verify this or point me to a good website?
2. Would this tractor have a live pto?
3. This has a 3 speed trans and a Hi/Lo. It won't stay in 1st gear. Is this a common problem? Difficult and/or expensive to fix?
4. Doesn't appear to have power steering. When did p/s become available on MF tractors? Is it difficult and/or expensive to add p/s?
5. Any specific things we should watch out for on this model?
6. Asking price is $5,000 obo which seems kind of high given the trans problem. Otherwise this tractor looks and runs really well. Could use some carb work....doesn't want to run without considerable choke. Any opinions on the price or this model in general? Thanks for helping.

I have a 50 with loader. It works well for me, but I also have power steering. Be sure to look carefully at the front end, these are agricultural tractors and were not designed for using a loader for heavy work. Look for cracks or welds. I bought my 50 a year ago for $2400.00 with a rusted out bush hog to boot. The Massey 200 loader I found on the internet for $500.00 and together they make a nice package. In my opinion if the tractor is not close to 90% condition, pass at that price.

For 5k you could do much better in my area of north east Maryland.

Interesting you should mention the front end. The front HAS been welded so that the track width cannot be adjusted. I wasn't looking for cracks, I just assumed it was done when the loader was added. I'm gonna take your advice and pass at that price, or rather, counsel my friend to pass.

Glad I could help. It really is a great tractor when in good condition. With all the problems you described I think you're (I mean you're friend!) is making the right decision to pass.

We've had MHF 50 gas for about 18 years now.

1. Others can probably help you with SN.

2. Some, I believe most, had live PTO in the form of a two-disc clutch. Push halfway down and the ground drive drops out. All the way down, the PTO stops. A little experimenting should show you which it has. Also, they had a ground drive mode in which the PTO was geared to the rear axle drive, and its direction and speed was proportional to the tractor direction and speed.

3. Jumping out of gear is a new one on me. Sounds like some sort of damage. It's not uncommon for them to stick in gear (1st or rev) because the shift fork slot seems to wear afterwhile. There have been a bunch of posts on that, and that can be coped with. But jumping out of gear would concern me.

4. I think they had power steering as an option by then. Ours doesn't have it and I never missed it, but then we don't have a loader either. It would be my guess you would be better to add some sort of aftermarket kit rather than look for original parts.

5. Well, gear sticking as mentioned above. But it seems to happen only seldom at worst.

There have been scattered complaints of oil pump drive shafts failing.

6. That considerable choke comment is a little suspect. I would pull some plugs and check them. It could just need a tune up, or the engine (rings) could be on its last legs. Our has always started fine, even before the overhaul we did on it a few years after we got it.

We've always liked ours but from what you describe I would sure hesitate to give %5000. I don't know that I would make any sort of offer until I understood more clearly what was up with the trans and engine, and what it was going to cost and take to solve both problems.
