I have recently purchased a Massey 44 special and i am wondering if anyone can tell me about the steering on these tractors, i am a beginner tractor fan. The steering is very difficult to turn the wheel, it does not have power steering. Is the steering supposed to be so hard that it can barely be turned even when the tractor is moving, sometimes it will turn easy and other time it is nearly impossible to move. It seems like it almost binds at time somewhere in the steering box or linkage. When you lift the front tires off the ground with the loader the steering moves very easy. Is there any usual problems in the steering on these old timers. The steering has alot of play, i tightened the adjuster on the box and the bindiing seems to get worse. Is there power steering available for these units. I would appreciate any other kind of information about these tractors any of you guys can tell me.
Thanks

Floyd We had a 44 with a narrow front end that did the exact same thing while growing up on the farm. I remember dad taking the steering box off several times with the problem being persistant. We ended up installing a wide front end on the tractor so will never know just what was wrong. Thinking back though I will bet it was the thrust bearing that was bad. Good Luck and Take Care
