The hand clutch on my "new" 1957 444 Massey does not stop the tractor so I have no live PTO. They manual addresses adjusting the hand lever but it is vague on adjusting the clutch located in the belt pulley. I was told by the previous owner that it was common practice to tighten the hand clutch to avoid slippage while plowing and it had been that way all the while he owned it. I believe I have to adjust the clutch springs but unsure. Any pointers on adjustment and specs to set the springs to will be appreciated.

What are your reference manuals? The MH Owner's
Manual on a 444 has about two pages of information
as does the I & T Shop Manual. The Massey-Harris Dealer Service Manual has about seventeen. There
is one on e Bay,listed 17 pages of adjust/repair. Perhaps you need the genuine reference manual,
verses "vague" component summaries. Good luck.

I have a 58 444 that has the opposite problem the hand clutch [pto] slips under a load. I was told that it was common for people to get around the slipage by bolting the clutch disks together. Your clutch will not slip anymore but you have no live power. That may be what you have with your tractor. There is a adjustment nut between the two brake petals. Give that a try.
