Just repaired some wiring on my '59 TO-35, now when I take the key to 'off' the tachometer goes full scale and the engine doesn't shutdown, if I remove the plug from the alternator then it shuts down as it should, ie tack goes to '0'and engine stops. It appears as the excitation lead to the alternator is backfeeding and not allowing the key to stop engine. Any ideas????? ??? Thanks for your help..... ...

add a diode to the wire going to the excitation lead. it acts as a one way valve and will stop the backfeeding problem.

David:

This is a common mistake to make when converting to a 12V alternator charging system. You must wire a diode in series with the alternator to prevent this.

There has been a lot of discussion about this in the past. Search the archives here and on the Ford N board for instructions and drawings about how to do this.
