I have a MF 203 that needs an engine rebuild. It runs fine, but is leaking oil real bad from many gaskets and has enough blow by to cause oil to come out the dipstick hole. After and hour or so Oil pressure is REAL low.

So the question I'm trying to figure out. Buy a new tractor or rebuild the Perkins 3 cycl engine.

Any idea how much to rebuild the engine in Michigan. I figure: Gaskets, Piston, rings, sleeves, main bearing....etc.

Any idea a good person to do this?

Thanks,

-Gerry

I may be missing something, but ----- -- shows the following:
UM10510 Complete Engine Overhaul Kit MF 35, 50, 135, 150 and others with A3-152 diesel

MF 35, 50, 135, 150 and others with A3-152 diesel Price: $425.00 I paid less than $400 (including shipping) at Stevens Ag Parts about three years ago. My neighbor rebuilt it in less than sixteen hours total. Of course it took several winter months because he had other things to do. C. T.

Exchange engines, parts, crank - RF Equipment in Morrice (Perry). rfequipment.com if I remember right. Your kit and crank ought to be under $100 total.

MF dealer - Hodges Farm Equipment (off US23 by Grand Blanc) or Van Pammel in Armada. 40 minutes north of Warren up grosbeck (North avenue). Some days good prices, some days bad. My wife was quoted $1500 more for my Case 430 than I was. Depends on who you get.

North center farm suppy in Armada does some of my shop work. They always seem to have shop work so must be doing OK.

The two stores are within spitting distance.

Are you north, south or West of detroit?

Actually, it is in Dundee, about 20 minutes south of Ann Arbor.

I'd happily pay a $200-300 for transport though.

5-10 thousand is absolutely ridiculous to rebuild that engine. It's not extremely big or difficult to work with. Local Massey dealer around here quoted my grandfather about 4 grand to do a 65 diesel(A4-203). I don't know the prices on the 35 but my dealer quoted me 500 for a rebuild kit for the 65, plus about 50 for bearings. Another shop that I talked to quoted about 150 to cut the crank, 350 to check/deck/sleeve the block, and 350 for the head(check/deck/valves/seats/guides). Shop around, and check with the Massey dealer, beacuse they may be your best option. I can't see any way that it would cost more to do the smaller 35 engine.

I agree with the other posts but I'll throw out another option. If you are in need of your tractor quickly, you might consider a remanufactured engine. Reliable rebuilders do a good job of rebuilding engines and swapping the old engine for the remanufacturered one will get you back in operation quick. I agree with MFPoor that it ain't the Space Shuttle you're working on so if you have the time, the mechanical aptitude, and the tools and measuring equipment, the parts are relatively cheap. The unknown is will you have to do machine work, like grind the crank. Certainly most people do not have the equipment or the knowledge to replace or knurl valve guides, grind valves, replace seats, etc. so these tasks have to be farmed out and that takes time and additional money. If you don't need the machine running quickly, it's a neat project to undertake. But if you need to get back to work with your tractor, you might consider swapping the old engine for a remanufactured one. I went through this with a TO-30 and I finally decided I needed the tractor more than I needed the experience of rebilding the engine.

Perkins AD152-3 is without a doubt, the most economical diesel engine on this, or any other planet. Cheap to operate and cheap to rebuild. The last time I checked, TISCO major overhaul kit was just a tick over $550. (But it has been a couple years) Any good diesel shop, or engine rebuilder should be able to do the job. It's not space shuttle technology. Very simple little engine. That's ANOTHER reason why I like them so much. Unless you're prepared to buy a new tractor, I'd say your best bet would be to go through the one you have. Maybe a new clutch while it's down. Then you'll know what you have. Buy another used tractor and you might be doing the same thing this time next year. JMHO, and worth at least what you paid for it.

I don't have the time or equipment to undertake the rebuild myself. I'd happily thorugh 2-3,000 into it.... I love the little guy.

Every shop I talk to is telling me between 5,000 - 10,000 to rebuild it. When I do the math. I figure 1,000 for parts I figure they are taking about 60 hours @ $70 hour to do the repair if they are only charging $5,000. Is it realy 60 hours labor?

Next I checked out engine. I figured I could get a remanufatured engine but they seem to be running about 4,000 and then you have to pay $$ to get them installed.. Whew! I guess it will take about 5-6K to rebuild the thing.....

You need to do some more research. No reputable shop would charge $5000-6000 for a rebuild of that simple engine! I'm sure that you could find a reputble rebuilder that will do the engine for $2000-3000. It can't be that hard to install the engine. You need a cherry picker and some chain and a little bit of elbow grease and hiring someone to do that job shouldn't cost anymore that $200-300 tops.

$5000 to $10,000!!!!! Put that baby on a trailer and ship it this way! I smell M.O.N.E.Y.!

That is plum ridiculous. Local shop that used to be a big Massey dealer, still works on them exclusively. He did a friends 135 diesel last summer for under $2800. picked up and delivered.
