I'm doing some research on buying my first tractor and have been reading countless threads here at YTD, posted some questions in other forums about other tractors. A lot of what I read points newbies like myself to the Ford N's.

There's a TO-20 and TO-30 for sale near me. I don't need a big tractor. There's ~1acre field I would like to brush-hog, haul around cord wood and general tinkering. I'm not a mechanic but I can fix things so not afraid of mechanical repairs, but really don't want to be rebuilding engines and such.

From my latest research the TO-20 & TO-30 look to be good fits for what I want to do.

Lookin' for some advice from those that have been there before me. Are they good tractors?

Parts availability? Repairs etc?

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

First let me say that I own and use on my ranch, a TO-30 and it's a good little machine. (I also have a Ford 4610 that's the heavy weight machine on the place.) The TO- series Ferguson's are reliable, easy to maintain and easy to fix when something does go wrong. Parts are generally not a problem for the routine maintenance items and even the other parts can be had from salvage yards and Sparex for example. There is wealth of online help you can go to on this forum.
If I had to do it all over, I'd look for a TO-35 Deluxe which has a bit more power(35Hp) and live hydraulics. That makes it much easier to use that the -20 or the -30. It also has a 3x2 tranny for six forward speeds.
The -20 and -30 have transmission driven hydraulic pumps and PTO's so when you step on the clutch, engine poer to the pto stops and the hydraulics do also. The pto can backdrive the rear axle (which means stepping on the clutch does not disconnect the pto from the rear axle so the rotational inertia of an implement continues to drive you forward) so for safety sake, you need an ORC (over running coupler, kinda' of a check valve for torque transmission)when you use a rotary cutter.
The TO-20 and -30 are excellent machines for their time with the -30 at about 5hp more the -20 and you won't go wrong with either of them. They're about a $1000-1500 cheaper than the TO-35 and easier to find. Hope this helps you.
