I was test driving a MF165 today and it had great power steering in both directions. I stopped and took it to full lock in right and then back to full lock left and everything went fine. I then proceeded to drive and when I went to turn left again, I had no power steering going left. The right steering still is effortless. I did dump about a gallon of hyraulic fluid when a hyd. remote let go about a minute before I tried the steering test. I can see nothing binding and the pump makes no noises. Please let me know what you think. I think it's a nice tractor but this steering problem makes me reluctant. Thanks in advance

Hi,
Chuck is right about the turn buckle but you need to look closely at the rest of the system as well. The whole system relies on there being little or no play anywhere to activate the spool on top of the ram and give you power. If you initial turn of the wheel is lost in play you have reduced or no PS. Look particularly where the ram rod is retained in the casting and play in the turnbuckle pins. They can be drilled out but the casting pin isn't so easy. There is also a 1 1/8" nut on the linkage with a straight slot screw inside it. This can be undone 1/4 turn at a time. This may improve things but if there is play it is not the full answer.

The 165 has a turnbuckle above the p.s. cylinder.
This needs to be slightly adjusted till it turns
both ways. This should get it working fine. Some
time in the future you may want to check for pin
and yoke wear in the linkage. Also the later s/n
had a little different linkage but same principle.
If cared for it should be a good tractor. Chuck
