Hi all, the hydraulic top cover that is pictured (if all goes according to plan, if not it's under the "Help Identify" photo gallery) is currently mounted on my (new to me) 1959 MF 35 with the 4 cylinder diesel. I'm sure this isn't the right cover for the tractor and the only similar ones I've seen were on an MF 148 and on the British 500 series. The position control works but the draft control doesn't. I'm hoping to be able to trade it for the correct item at some point (unless of course it can be made to function correctly). I do have a couple of other pics that can be posted if it will help. Any thoughts or information would be much appreciated. Thanks, tractorsam

That liftcover is off of an MF100 series tractor someone may have changed the back section from the transmission back with one from an MF100 series.

Hello, very interesting,
I would agree with Big Dean. The cover looks to have come off a 100 series tractor. In the UK the later type lift cover was fitted around 1971-72. I cannot find any reference in my MF parts book (1980) to suggest that it came from a 135 maybe a 148 though. My 165 book shows both types of cover and this is my guess that it is from a 165. You have the later type stub arms for the automatic hitch fitting but no Pressure Control quadrant. To the best of my knowledge all later 100 series had PC so maybe your cover has been rebuilt to suit the 35 as far as possible.
I cannot see any reason why the draft will not work but I suspect that the internal adjustments might not have been carried out correctly. Regards
DavidP

Hello, up until very recently I owned a 1975 MF-135 (British built) in the UK. It had the older type of top cover and the only tractors I'd seen one like this on was a 148 and the 500 series. The quadrant appears to match the rest of the cover but you never know. So you reckon that if I strip the cover, rebuild it properly, and re-do all of the setting that I ought to be able to make the draft control work? Also, the bottom of the top link connection is secured to a plate around the PTO which also mounts the check chains. With this set up the check chain mounts are right at the bottom (about 2" below the PTO)and they seem too low. Were they originally higher (about an inch above the PTO) on 35's? Many thanks, tractorsam
P.S.- Where abouts in South Wales are you?

Hello Sam,
I'm in Bridgend which is about halfway between Cardiff and Swansea.
As to rebuilding the cover.....don't rush into it! There are quite a few special tools and setting gauges that are needed to do the job properly. Unless you have these it can't be done properly. If as I suspect the plate is off a 165, the position of the lugs at the bottom will cause a much steeper angle for the chains. Longer arms on the 165 would eased this angle. The main thing is that the arms cannot swing out and hit the wheels. Two positions were available on 35's and 135's, the brackets were interchangeable, side for side. Most people used them in the top holes.
If I can help any more, please get in touch.
DavidP
PS If anyone is not sure where Wales is, we have that bit of real estate in our back yard called England!!!

Any ideas on which 100 series model it might be off or are they all the same. The hydraulic quadrant has draft control and position control, with transport and constant pumping positions. Should this top be compatible with the 35? The position control is working fine but it appears the draft control is disconnected/non-functional. I think it"s just the top cover based largely on the paint, quite different to the rest. Thanks, tractorsam
