How much oil in MF-35

I posted an earlier message about purchasing a 1960 MF-35, 3-cylinder, diesel tractor. I plan order a manual, plus a bunch of parts to restore this, but for the time being, I hope someone can answer this question.

How many quarts of oil does this tractor take and what kind? Will typical automobile oil 10-30W work? The dipstick is not the orginal. It is a homemade stick so I don't know know low it is, but I believe it is low on oil. I want to change it and put the correct amount in it.

Thank
Bob

Bob:

See my post to your earlier inquiry.

It holds 6 quarts with filter change.

Use 15W40 diesel spec oil. Do not use 10W30 or automotive spec oil.

Replacement dipsticks are readily available for these engines.

It should have a spring, multi-level centering washer, and O-ring beneath the oil filter and another O-ring above the filter. All of these parts must be there or the filter will be ineffective. The spring and washer are no longer available from MF so if yours are missing (not uncommon) you will need to convert it to the later spin-on type filter. This is easily and inexpensively done.

Are all these parts, filter conversion, dipstick, etc., all available on this site?

Also, the tractor sat for a year. Upon starting it up, it was blowing blue smoke (burning oil). After running a for a little while and starting it for a few days, the smoke seemed to subside, but if I throttle up quickly, it still smokes a little. I think the oil is very low, reason for oil refill questions and dipstick problems. But you said it could be the oil bath. I took the bottom of the bath off and it was filled with oil to the rim of the bottom piece I took off. I'm hoping that is all it is because I will hate to rebuild the top end.

I believe most everyone is using 15w-40 diesel oil in these models. Gas tractors even benefit from the diesel oils... There have been many discussions on this. Do a search and read some older postings. Heck, some are even mine. The MF65 takes 5 quarts, not sure about the 35. Hopefully someone else will chime in. Good Luck Aaron

Thanks. I should have known what oil to use since I have two diesel vehicles. I didn't even think about that.
