Well, I bought my neighbors 1960 MF35 diesel. I plan on restoring it. I have restored several cars (Old VWs), so this will be a new experience. It is blowing smoke so I think the first thing is to replace the top end. I am going to order a manual, but I am hoping I don't have to split the motor to do this.

Any advice for the new guy?

Thanks

Hi Bob All of the three cylinder Perkins engine I know of Gas & Diesel hold 7-1/2 quarts of oil with the filter changed. 15-40 is what I recommend for that engine.

Bob:

The cause of the smoke depends upon the color of the smoke and when it does it.

How many cylinders?

It is a 3 cylinder tractor. It sat for a year and was blowing blue smoke out when first started and running. It has been a couple of days and the blue smoke has subsided, but I think it is also low on oil. I am going to post another question on how much oil and what kind to use. I need a new dipstick. The old one is missing and there is a makeshift dipstick on it, so I don't know how much to put in it.

The 3 cylinder Perkins diesel is a good engine and the most desireable of the engines offered in the MF-35. I have two MF-35s with Perkins diesels.

I suggest that you get it up to opereating temperature and change the oil and filter. Use a good 15W40 diesel spec oil. It holds 6 quarts with filter. Make sure that the spring, dimpled washer and both O-rings are in place in the filter canister or you may as well leave the filter out.

Clean the air filter and make sure that it is not overfilled with oil. If it is, it can draw oil into the engine and burn it causing smoke.

Run it awhile before deciding that it needs work. These engines are durable but are designed to be worked. It is not uncommon for them to smoke somewhat if idled for extended periods. After working it a bit the smoke may subside.

Good luck.

Dean
