Thanks
Devin

Hi Devin. Is your tractor a gas model? I recently did the conversion on my MF35, and it wasn't hard. I used a conversion bracket I got through ebay.
This is it: >Link
There>Link are other vendors for the same bracket.
You may need to modify the top curved arm bracket to fit right because the alternator is bigger in diameter than the genny. That caused mine to be in the path of the governor rod, so I cut out the middle and put a u-shaped piece up and over the rod. The output just goes to the battery side of the solenoid, with a 10 gauge wire, and the power to your ignition switch and lights comes from there, not from the old regulator anymore.
You will need to run a wire from the positive side of the coil, where the power from the ignition switch connects, to the exciter pin on the alt, with a diode in it to prevent back feed to the coil after you shut off the ignition, other wise the engine won't shut off. Also connect the volt sensor wire. It's all easy.
Isspro makes a low rpm electric tach that I used and found easy to install.
Go ahead and do it, you'll like the nice consistent 14 volts you get. I used a G.M. Delco 10 si alternator. You can get a rebuilt one from any auto parts store, (I asked for one to fit a 78 Chevy truck) or ebay. 3-wire is preferred over 1 wire because they charge at a lower rpm. 1-wire needs the engine revved up to get a charge going, and they always bleed a little power from the battery, so it could go dead if it sits a long time.

Thanks for the info. My 165 is diesel. Just looking into possibly doing this. A great winter project.

Depends. If the tachometer cable goes to the back of the generator, you loose the mechanical tachometer but can go to an electronic tachometer. You need a new mounting bracket or an alternator with a long mounting bolt adapter. You probably need a small diameter and wide pulley for the alternator.
