Hello all, I'm thinking of going and looking at a 1959 MF-35 with the 4 cylinder diesel. I've had a bit of experience with these tractors in the UK but I'm now located in Nova Scotia, Canada. Can anyone tell me what parts availability is like over this side of the pond? It was described as having reasonable bonnet/hood and wings, tires not too bad, had an engine rebuild about 7 years ago. Does have the dual clutch. I'm told it starts well but with a small amount of ether and when it's running it runs well without smoke etc. Any ideas on value? Also because I'm not the most familiar with this model anything to watch out for? Thanks, tractorsam

all comments I have read on this tractor are correct but the cold starting problem is easily overcome by modifying the cylinder head and fitting 4 glow plugs...the same as Land Rover fit to their diesels...there was an article in Tractor and Machinery mag which detailed the job...Don't know if you are familiar with it in USA but in UK it's very popular....I "cut my teeth" on 4cyl 35's when I was an apprentice tractor engineer

I have a TO35 with the Standard diesel, and I noticed the other night that this site actually offers a rebuild kit for the engine, as well some other parts for it. From what I have experienced with mine, there are alot of parts in salvage yards for these. The couple of times I've needed odd things I had them within a couple of days. They weren't cheap, but they were available.

Sam:

The MF-35 is a great tractor but the Standard Motors 4 cylinder diesel is the least desirable engine that was used, and those so equipped bring less than gasoline or Perkins equipped models. This engine has a reputation of being hard to start in cold weather, and I expect that it gets rather cold in Nova Scotia.

Having never worked on this engine, I cannot comment on parts availability.

I've known several of them and they're none of them consistant. One smokes but starts, the other runs clean but is a pig to get started, I saw one ran clean and it started well, but I also saw one only just started and blew as much smoke as a steamer! I don't desperately need the tractor but having had a TEF-20 and an MF-135 with the Perkins diesel and just sold them both I'm now back to a gas Farmall Super A and I feel the need for diesel and a 3pt. So price is more of an issue than easy starting. Thanks for the reply, tractorsam
