I just noticed this today as it is the first time I had on the road. It is a MF35. When I am going in 1st gear and want to change up to 2nd gear it grinds. Well it grinds going to any gear. Is there a way to adjust the clutch. Do these have syncro's in the transmission. Thanks Shawn

Jeez... Mom would'ave disowned me (or worse) had she ever heard of me trying to do that.... I did try it once (purely by accident) and was rewarded by some serious grinding and a tractor rolling backward off the hill. Lesson learned, no harm except for all the metal shavings in the oil. And that brown stain on the seat....

To be honest, no they're probably not designed to be shifted while moving, but I do it all the time with our 165 and 285 masseys and the 1600 and 1855 Ollies. The 285 grinds a little more than the 165 does but it's got over 6000 hours on the original clutch, so it comes with the teritory. For the most part I have no problems upshifting with the 165 or 185, and most times you have to if you're pulling any kind of a load.

As far as the Ollies go, they're not too fond of being shifted once moving, so you have to let out the clutch a little so the gears line up and the shifter pops in. Takes practice but it's not bad once you do it enough. I'd rather do that than try to start out from a standstill with an 18' chopper box behind me loaded with haylage. It just ain't gonna move very good in high gear without slipping the clutch A LOT so you don't snub it.

Don your lucky your running an Ollies, if it was say an Alis 190 you would have the tranny sitting in the bottom of the tranny case since they never liked being shifted from one gear to another when moveing.

I guess so!! 2 of our driveways out of the feilds are up hill, and if I've got a full load of silage and the chopper behind the 1855, she grunts a lot even in 5th gearm (sometimes the clutch still slips and makes a little moaning sound) when I start out. The 1600 is geared low enough I only have to shift up if I've got a big load behind me, but it spends most of it's time on the blower or the hay rake.

I think the gear shifting problem is why a good number of companys put in things like the Farmall TA or Allises high low etc. Thjat way they could be shifhted but not shifted LOL

Gerald and old are correct once more. However, have you been to Big Dean's website? I think he has detailed info on clutch adjustment which should get you started on 'better' shifting.

Ok so I start out in the gear I want to use and don't shift. Right?

One more thing. Is this normal. I have to turn the rpm's down to almost idle to engage in any gear or PTO without grinding. Really thanks for the help as you can tell I am new at this.

if you don't pull something heavy now and then, you can get bit of fuzzy rust on the surfaces, makes the shifting difficult

last week I think it was Big Dean mentioned putting trany in hi/hi and smoking the clutch just a teeny bit to polish things up, works well for me

It takes a few moments for all the gears to stop turning onch you push the clutch down. Think about all that iron spinning, it just takes time for it to stop spinning once it starts. By slowing down the engine you slow down all that iron so it stops faster. Also a warning, don't know on your tractor but on some tractors shifhting the tranny when your moveing can cause them to start jumping out of gear.

No synchros in the transmission. Its a gear slider, a crash box. Its only intended to be shifted while stopped.
