What is the easiest way to tell what size Chrysler an engine is. I have a super 101 with the Chrysler in it. I went to an auction today and bought a Chrysler engine that looks like it was out of a truck. I say that because it has rubber motor mounts on it. It measures 23 inches on the head, so I believe it will work. Im just curious if you can tell the difference between a 230 and a 218 without tearing them apart.

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

The identification number on all Chrysler L6 (L head 6 cylinder) engines is on a rectangular boss just above the front left freeze plug. The 217, which is what the 101 Supers were built with, will be either a T96 or T116. I don't have the model numbers for the 230, but Andy Bernbaum at www.oldmoparts.com might be able to help you identify the engine if you have the ID number. My 101 Super had a rebuilt exchange engine in it and the number on the boss had been ground off, but the number "218" had been stamped into a flat boss right on top of the head. I don't think this was factory. If the ID number isn't there, pulling the head and measuring the bore and stroke is about the only other way you can determine the engine size as far as I know. The good news is that any 23" (small block) L6 block will fit into your tractor.

Thanks for the reply. I bought a junk front end that had been hacked off a Massey super 101 at an auction for $50. I was after the bell housing because the one in the one Im restoring was broke where it bolts into the frame. It was nothing that would hurt the performance, just an eyesore that bothered me. The engine that was in the frame still had the rubber mounts on it from where it came out of a truck. Ill check the numbers you gave me and see if its a 217 or not.

Thanks,
Jerry
