The tranny on our 550 has always popped out of first gear. (It has the manual trans with the belt variable speed drive)

Can this be fixed just by adjusting shifter linkages or is it just wear in the tranny. If it is adjustment I'll give it (another) try but if it is tranny wear I won't bother until I have time to take the trans out.

Thanks.

before you tighten the traction belt on the transmission you need to loosen the lock screws with i forget weather it's a 1/4 or a 5/16 wrench, you then loosen the 3 bolts with a 15/16 on the transmission where it's bolted to the frame.then you loosen the bottom lock nut on the threaded rod and tighten the top one to push the transmission down to tighten the belt.then loosen the top one enough so that you can turn the collar inbetween the 2 nuts on the thread rod and tighten the nuts together so they stay put. Then have one person in the cab to try the gears after you tighten the set nuts.If it doesn't shift right,re loosen and move the shift leaver and re tighten untill it is satisfactory.to adjust the top belt, you set the nuts on the cylinder for the variable speed to adjust the travel so that the belt is flush with the bottom of the pully at at full downward travel on the cylinder.Hope this helps.phill

On our 550 anytime we adjust the drive belts we also have to adjust the shift linkage as the manual shows.

I don't have a manual, could you give me a quick primer on adjusting the linkages?

Thanks, JP.
