My brother bought a MF 50 diesel that was in pieces (restoration gone bad), and is trying make good of it. Here is his problem: The dash panel has 5 small and 1 large gauge cut-outs, but not all of the gauges. We figured the large is for the tach. The small ones for temp, oil pressure, voltage, gas and ???? What could the fifth cut-out be for, and are we right about the four others?

Thanks in advance,
Joe l

Oh by the way...I saw Gerald's answer involving a separate hole for the hour meter. Depending on the year of his tractor and it's similarity to yours, he could be right. I just know that on mine, the hour meter is incorporated into the "Tractormeter" much like an "odometer" would be. Hope this helps. dave

I suspect that some users, government and industrial more likely, want true operating hours for expense logging (or rental) not tachometer hours because tachometer hours are only correct at PTO standard speed. They accumulate much slower at engine idle, though a lot of engine idling would speed up the need for service instead of delaying it by the mechanical tach's hour meter. Hence the electrically operated hour meter. I suppose I could go look at the parts book to see if it was a MF option on the MF-135. Might look by next week.

JoeK...I got an MF-50 too...late sixties model. On mine the Gauges are, for the small ones left to right: oil p, fuel qty, eng temp, amps. The big guage in the middle over the small ones is the "TractorMeter" which has a tach on the bottom half of the scale and tractor speed in mph by gear on the top of the scale. Hope this helps.

Wouldn't be voltage, would be ammeter for current. The fifth might be for a time meter separate from the one in the tachometer. That's what's on my MF-135. Might not have come from the factory. It reads true hours, while the one in the tachometer is only correct at standard PTO speed.

In the MF-135 parts book and both manuals that I have it shows four small gauges (on the deluxe model) and the tach. Fuel, amps, oil pressure, and temperature. On the same page in the parts book there's a bracket and an hour meter with the note that its for tractors sold in Missouri. There's other things in the back for Missouri tractors, such as ROPS. As if there's been a Missouri law that required an hour meter independent of engine speed. Perhaps not for general sale but for contract sales to the state highway commission. The hour meter on my MF-135 is at the middle top of the dash.
