MF 1085 Starter Problems

I am having problems with the starter on my MF 1085. I had the starter rebuilt just a few months ago because it was grinding on the flywheel.

Now the starer is not engaging the flywheel except every 4 or 5 times you turn the key. It seems to bounce off and spin/grind. Then when it finally engages, everything works as it should.

I guess this should be obvious about taking it off and having it checked again.

But just in case the ring gear is damaged, do you have to pull the cab off again to break the tractor in half to get access? Or can you separate the engine and leave the cab in place?

All advice and comments appreciated.

Little trick I've used is to take a die-grinder and clean up the teeth on your ring gear, unless they are really badly mangled. My 274 started doing that, and fixed it up by using the grinder, use a screwdriver or bar to roll the engine. New pinion on starter helps a lot too. Got 2 1085's and a 285, gotta love those 318's.

My 1085 doesn't have a cab on it but I have pulled the bell housing bolts loose, and taken the cowling off and slid it apart. Last time I split the tractor, I had it apart in 1 hour, but I had the ole lady helping.
