Man, my Perkins is leaking more fuel than it burns

I thought I smelled a raw-diesel odour when I was mowing lately, and the fuel consumption has been up, but it didn't really dawn on me how much it was leaking until I got off the machine repeatedly today to adjust the rear blade while grading a road through the woodlot.

This is on a 1961 MF 35, btw. The drips seem to be from the little pump handle on the right side and from the injector area on the left. The drips stop when I shut off the fuel cock, and the engine starts o.k. when I turn the fuel back on. I have noticed no difference in engine performance.

The fuel lines aren't obviously leaking, but is there any chance it could be a simple fix? If so, where do I look first?

Get yourself a rebuild kit for that pump at Carsons in Perth, sounds like the diaphragm is leaking, downside is it could end up in your crankcase. Been playing with Masseys all my life, know a few tricks and can always come here when I get stuck.

I went to see the guy who fixes my farm stuff today and the MF35 is supposed to go to his place on the first rainy day. Corn harvest, eh?

He figured it would be the rubber things around the fuel line, but he will wash it all off then let it run for a half hour, observe, and go from there.

The oil level hasn't moved in the last sixty hours of operation, and it smells normal.

I was kinda hoping CT's pinhole leak would be the problem, but a worn out and cracked rubber gasket is a believable hypothesis, as I have replaced other disintegrating rubber hoses on the tractor -- apart from brakes, the only repairs in two years of operation.

I may very well end up at the counter at Carson's for a pump repair kit, though my friend seemed to think he would find the parts on his bench.

Last time I tried to post it wouldn't let me, so here goes!

Rod, I am not a mechanic, and if I am insulting you, I apologize, but I had a bad leak, and it was not obvious, but my neighbor found a pinpoint hole due to rubbing against the engine (or something, I have forgotten exactly what). The problem was, the way it was dripping, it didn't point to the hole. I was ready to replace the tubing when my neighbor jumped in. He brazed it and problem solved. I hope it is that simple for you.

Sounds like you either need a rebuild kit or a new pump. 35 years ago I stocked rebuild kits for them for the 354 engines. We used to do a couple a year. Questions?
