I've been told by people more knowledgeable than myself that the perkins gas engine on my MF135 can be converted to a diesel engine. Is this possible? More importantly is it practical? Other than needing a tune-up my tractor runs fine, I'm just looking down the road, so to speak.

My neighbor (who is a full time farmer) told me he new of someone who used to do the conversions which is what got me to thinking of it. I have no immediate plans to do this (if it ain"t broke, don"t fix it) but if anything major happens to the engine in the future it will be an option I consider. Thanks for the info. I need to get some manuals for this tractor and get it tuned up.

Just be careful if you think you can use an industrial AD3-152 to upgrade with. The crank/timing case and harmonic balancer are different and will not fit an MF tractor. As well through the years early cranks had a cord rear seal while later had a lip rear seal and I am not sure whether this resulted in different crank cases.

Yes it is the same block. I cant remember but I believe the crankshaft has to be changed. Definitely the rods and pistons. Of course the head and put on an injector pump. Maybe cheaper to change engine. Best buy a parts book and check what parts are the same. Just a thought from an old MF dealer. Joe

The conversion is simple in concept. You remove the hood. You split the tractor at the clutch. You unbolt the front end from the front of the gas engine. You reassemble with a Perkins diesel engine. Simple, but costly. Probably only a few bolts are common to the two Perkins engines. But if made for the 135 their bolt patterns match.

I must have misunderstood what I was told then. It was my understanding the same block was used.

Same block CASTING is used. Tons of different machining done during production though. Very few (if any) parts actually interchangeable.

I believe you are right. The block, crank, rods and pistons are identical. It's the head and fuel delivery that get changed. That said, the gas perkies must have been solidly overbuilt....

I think it can be done, reasonably.

I just happened to have the MF-135 parts book handy. I'll have to eat my prior post though its definitely possible that way.

These things I found with the SAME MF and Perkins part numbers. Late diesel and gas, the early diesel was different:

Block, crank, flywheel, crankcase, cam, cam drive gears, oil pump, exhaust manifold, rod bearing inserts, rocker arm assembly, rocker cover, rear cover (on the head), sleeves, wrist pin bushing (in the rod), wrist pin retainers, and water pump.

These I found different:

Head, connecting rods, pistons, starter, control rods, the diesel depends on the injection pump for governing but it mounts the same place as the gas governor. Valves and breather tubes are different. I can't tell if the wrist pins are the same, they are only sold with pistons. Then one needs injectors and their lines and ends up with a distributor and plug wires left over. The diesel has a fuel pump fitting where the gas has a plate to cover the hole. And there are lots of diesel fuel filter details.

So if one ever wears out the rod bearings in a gas Perkins of this pair it has to be from running with NO oil, not ordinary wear.

Or else the bottom end of the diesel Perkins of the pair is a little weak, but I've not heard any complaints in that direction.

There's a whole lot more in common than I'd have ever dreamed, though from an engineering viewpoint it makes much sense, even more for manufacturing.

Darn, I thought the pistons were the same. Guess not. Talk about an overbuilt bottom end.... Wish the 65 came with a Perky gasser...
