2 weeks ago I bought a box lot of Massey parts at auction. I have this one part I am unable to identify. The part # is 1040888M91 . I have searched the web with that number but have turned up nothing. Someone thought it might have something to do with the PTO? Any help identifying it would be appreciated.

The end with the brass buttons is called a swash plate.Tip it in one side while holding the swash plate in the same position and then envision the whole thing rotating. You will see that this causes the pistons to move in and out.On the opposite end would be a plate that separates the two sides of the rotating bock, an intake side and a discharge side.As the pistons move back in the bores, a charge pump would fill the bores and as the block rotates , the piston would unload its oil into a passage that leads to an opposite block and pistons which would transfer the power to the other block. As the swash plate is moved or rocked back and forth the pistons would take on more or less oil causing the motor on the opposite end to turn faster or slower depending upon the position of the swash plate. The system allows for an infinitely variable speed control and transmission of power. This a very rudimentary explaination.I hope it is clearer than mud. lol,bob

Thanks Guys! Sounds like a good explanation. I collect AC & Simplicity GT's so everything else is foreign to me. LOL!

Actually, the next part outward, (not shown) that the brass "slippers" bear against is the "swash plate."

Looks like it goes into a hydrostatic unit for a transmission to me.Could be a motor or a pump.Regardless of what it fits, it is a precision unit and not very cheap to replace. How big is it? Could fit anything from a lawn mower to something as big as a combine depending on how large it is.
