I decide to put new pick up teeth on this old #10 we have. When finished I turned it over by hand and the teeth kept catching on the shields that separate them. The new teeth are identical to the old ones I have taken off, the set of the teeth is identical, I put the shields back on straight and about every third turn one of the tines rides up inside the shield. The shields are tapered at the top so that even a bent tine should be guided into the space between the shields. I spent about two hours on this and cannot figure out what is causing this to happen. This may be why there are many broken tines on this baler...dunno..it looks so simple to replace the teeth and have them revolve around inside the shields. The shields look die straight to me...any ideas, any thing I have missed???? It isn't going to work this way...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Michael, See if there is a wider gap between the
outer band than the others. A common problem is
the "L" shaped bracket on the outer end that holds
the follower cam. These bend out and allow the
cam bearings to drift out of the track and bend
bars and also ruin the cam. Be sure cotters in the
shaft. Tighten up the pickup spring to assist in
preventing problems in future. If the bearings in
the crank and roller are ruined they can be repl.
sep. as the whole assembly is expensive. Chuck

Hi,
Can't quite remember the tine arrangement on the '10' but make sure that you have the tines fitted the right way round. As the load of lifting the hay is put on them the coil of the tine should 'wind up' not open out. Also look for any wear or broken roller in the cam arrangement which turns the tine bars as they move around.
