I have a Massey Ferguson 135 with the Continental Z-145 (gas). What is the correct oil to use.

Long, long time ago, manufacturers recommended straight weight oils. (sae 20, sae 30, ect)

Forget that. There's better technology nowdays.

If it were MY Z-145, I'd run 10W-40 summer, 10W-30 winter. Stay away from the "c rated" diesel oils. (Most 15/40's are diesel oils. Some people use them in everything)

Why the recommendation to stay away from "C-rated" diesel oils?

Many of us with working farms use the diesel oils in EVERYTHING, with no ill effects.

So, I'm curious... is there a valid reason for your statement?

Hey Bob--the reason I asked the original question is I have been using 15W40 oil in my Continental gas powered 135 for some time with NO ill effects. Some of the other posts I have read gave me some second thoughts on the matter. The 15W40 I have used says it is for gas OR diesel engines.

Supposedly diesel oils have additives that are bad for catalytic converters, or maybe it's oxygen sensors?

Older formulations of oils contain an additive called ZDDP (zinc dialkyl diphosphate) that controlled sliding friction. This was most useful in protecting lifters from galling due to extreme loads placed on the tappets. Roller valvetrains and OHC followers of today's cars do not require this additive. The idea was that ZDDP was degrading catalytic converter and oxygen sensor performance. Due to the fact that the are no domestic cars running these cams today, the feds stepped in and mandated that it be removed from the formula. This led to a rash of failed cams in the hot rod/drag racing community where flat tappets are quite the norm. Fortunately, this additive can still be found in Shell's Rotella Oils and other diesel oils. Look for the starburst symbol on the bottle. API ILSAC GF-4 energy saving oil is the first indication that your oil does not carry the ZDDP additive.

To quote Hot Rod magazine...
"Modern heavy duty truck diesel oil with lots of ZDDP will be marked Cl-4 and Cl-4 Plus. They also easily pass the API Service SL gasoline performance test, but due to the ZDDP content, not the SL chemical composition specs. Such truck oils are an economical and effective solution for flat tappet longevity, according to many sounces." Hot Rod June 2006

Just offhand, I am currently looking at my cam and lifters (due to my ongoing engine build) and I'll be darned if they aren't mechanical flat tappets. ('59 MF65) I have yet to find my O2 sensor but the search continues. Perhaps it's behind my catalytic converter.

So where are the catalytic converters and sensors on a Z-145?

It's a funny thing about guys and the oil they use, they'll swear up and down that one is signifigantly better than another or that some are lousy, etc. Anything over the counter today is rated at a much higher level of spec than anything that was available when your tractor rolled off the assembly line. For years, I have been using Wallyworld 10-30 in the summer and 5-30 in the winter for EVERYTHING I own, cars and trucks and tractors etc. and nothing's quit yet. By the way, my truck and car both turn 20 next year and the Wallyworld oil is all they've ever tasted. As a result, I'm filthy rich and happy .... well, only half of that last statement is true.
