MH 55 Jumpin Out of 2nd Gear

Have a MH55 S/N 12456 that jumps out of second gear, and sometimes first. Since the first sliding gear slides forward and locks to 2nd gear to engage 2nd, I suspect wear has caused the dogs that lock the two together to wear. However, when I checked the clearance between fist sliding and second gear, when the two are supposed to be locked together, I found about 0.100 in. clearance between them. Since the dogs which lock the two gears have limited engagement, this seems like too much play.
When shifting into first or second the intital movement of the gear shift lever causes the clearance between the two gears to be zero; but when you let go of the lever, the sliding gear and shiter forks jumps back (0.100 in.) Noticed the same play when first gear is engaged, too. I am wondering if the detents on the top shifter rod (that controls first and second gear) are worn or were machined incorrectly. I tried putting a washer behind the upper rod detent spring to increase preload, but that didin't seem to help; so I am spliting the tractor to investigate futher. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Sorry for the long winded explanation.

This more of a educated Guess than answer, but those 55s Seemed to go bad in the Most Heavily used gear.I thing it is in the rail but not sure,my triple does it in 3rd under a full engine load in about 100-150 ft.,You can see it moving out and can't hold it in.Half Load It stays in forever, just full load.Good Luck with whatever you do.
