MF35 diesel thermostat

I think the thermostat in my MF35 diesel has stopped working correctly. After working the tractor for about 45 minutes in this weather the pressure guage has gone almost to the full scale and coolant starts spitting from the ends of some of the hoses. Anyway, I haven"t tinkered with the thermostat before. Looking at it quick, it appeared to me I"d have to take the fuel tank off to get to it. Is this the case, or can it be worked on without removing the tank first?

I have a 1981 MF205 4wd, with a 19hp diesel. After about 45 minutes, of cutting with a bush hog, the temp increases to about 200+ Deg C. The unit does not have a thermostat by design and similar (210 & 220) tractors have a 170 Deg thermostat. I have inspected the radiator and all looks clear and clean, the pump belt is tight also, the radiator cap is operating as expected (13psi)any ideas of what else to check ??

Does any body know what the maximum temp should be for a unit like this ?

You said the "... pressure gauge has gone almost to full scale...." I'm sure you mean the temperatue gauge. Makse sure that your radiator passages on the air side are clear of debris(chaff, bugs, dirt, etc), your water pump drive belt is nice and tight and that your pressure cap is working correctly(a bad pressure cap reduces the cooling system pressure and allows the coolant to boil at a lower temperature.) Also check your air claner. The air cleaner is really critical on a diesel and if it's restricted, your fuel/air ratio will be too high and higher combustion temperature will result. If all these things check out,THEN consider replacing the thermostat.

Evan:

You can change the thermostat in your MF-35D Perkins without removing the fuel tank but if the tank does not have much fuel in it it is not much more work to remove it.

I changed the thermostat in one of my MF-35D Perkins tractors without removing the tank by removing the front tank bolts and loosening the rear bolts so that I could lift the front of the tank to gain working clearance. I supported the tank with a piece of wood between the rocker arm cover and the bottom of the tank.

Had the tank not been nearly full I would probably have removed it as it is not that much more work once you have gone as far as I had.

I replaced mine on a 35 gas without removing the tank, may be a tighter fit on a diesel though. Now for the dumb question. Have you checked the radiator to see if the fins are stopped up with grass, leaves, bugs or whatever? Regards, Cosmo

Not much you can do with the fuel tank in place.
Need to undo the 2 bolts near the battery carrier, piping and slide it out from the 2 front springy things.

Thanks for the tips. I had already blown the leaves and hayseed off the front of the radiator and bought a new radiator cap when it first started acting up. I haven't checked the air cleaner tho in a coons age, so I'll do that next.

You might have a look into the fins as well, to be sure they are not caked full of mud or other debris.

I can see light though most of the radiator, so that in itself isn't the problem. I did check the air cleaner and it was quite gunked up. After cleaning it out and putting new oil in it, running the engine still quickly produces a sputtering of coolant. It now appears to be leaking from the around the pump bearing. I've ordered a complete set of hoses, a water pump, gasket and thermostat. I'll just replace the whole shebang and flush the radiator and be done with it. Thanks.
