Try moving the clamp that attaches the linkage to the shaft sticking out of the bell housing / transmission. It is quite finicky so a small change could make the difference.

Does the shaft in the top of bellhousing supposed to come up until it tops out and does it go down until it bottoms out or is there a happy mediem in the middle?

I don't know, all that I do know is that after I changed the clutch on our 285 I monkeyed with it A LOT until I had it just right. I never did try pulling it all the way out or pushing it all the way in.

Let us know if you get it working.

Good luck,
JP.

Have you tried lubing and adjusting the linkage that goes from the multi power selection lever to the little shaft that sticks out of the top of the tractor (either the bell housing or the gear case, I forget exactly how its put together without looking). I have noticed that those linkages are kind of light weight and can get bent and that they are kind of finicky to get set just right. To set there is some kind of set screw deal where the linkage attaches to the little shaft.

Good Luck,
JP.
