Looking at a M.F.165, gas engine, with step through loader, all Hyd. working. Has all bells and whistle, P.S. all gauges work. It has a foot lever right behind your right foot. Is this for locking both rear wheels for winter operation? Asking $5,500.00 for it. Any problems with this model you know of? Thanks..... ..... ..Water Boy

That pedal is the Differential lock, You use it when you need extra traction. The main thing is, Don't step on it while just one wheel is spinning because you may break something. You can engage it while you're moving and you step on it ahead of a known trouble spot, or you simply press the clutch and then step on the Diff. lock.

Does it have the Continental or Perkins gas engine? I'd have to say the weakest point opf any loader tractor is the front end. Crawl underneath and look at the fornt axel, where the pivot tube is welded to the axel. On our's it's cracked and I have to get around to fixing it one of these days.

Also look at the front of the engine where the whole front end bolts up. There may be cracks there too. $5,500 is a pretty fair price if it's in good shape. If the bucket is all beat up, it's probably a good sign it's been abused.

I'll admit, ours is abused some, but it's a handy little tractor to have. Ours has the Continental gas engine in it, has a little over 4100 hours on it, mostly short runs in the winter so it is spotting the hood with oil blowing out the exhaust once in a while. It does have some blow by, but if it's ran a little bit harder and for longer periods of time, they'll go much longer before needing a rebuild. Ours still starts and runs fine, just a little slobbery.

The lever you are talking about is used to engage the traction from both rear wheels. If I am correct it will only lock when the rear wheel begins to loose traction. Also I would have to agree about the diesel engine.

The gas may be its biggest problem. A diesel will be more costly to purchase but a lot cheaper to run. How often will you use it? A couple of hours a week moving snow or more often? Similar comments are on this board re a MF135. A 165 is more thirsty than a 135.
